"One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic." - Joseph Stalin
(Below: Stalin's Animal Farm representation)
Joseph Stalin was born as Iosif Vissarinovich Dzhugashvili. Who was he? What was his
role in history? Stalin's childhood was one where his family had nothing.
Through his struggles and hardships Stalin rose through the ranks of his
society and eventually reached the mantle of political power. When Stalin was
in control he wanted socialism to be spread throughout Russia using dictaorship
and not leave its borders whereas his counterpart wanted to expand socialism
all over the world.(Stalin, Joseph. 2013.) In the novel, Stalin is represented as pig which are usually greedy animals that take what they want, that goes by the name of Napoleon. (Stalin, Joseph. 2013.)
In the story, Napoleon, through his determination and cunning schemes gains power over the farm and its inhabitants from his rival Snowball (Trotsky). Some of these schemes included tricking the other animals into thinking that Snowball was giving out bad orders or presenting horrible ideas that would jeopardize the continuity of the farm. Napoleon's excessive nagging on this subject eventually led to the exile of Snowball which in turn gave Napoleon total control over the farm. Napoleon led with an iron fist, dictating everything and leaving nothing to the community. Animals on the farm that did not agree with Napoleon's views were immediately dispatched to prevent the spread of doubt. The animals on the farm were completely on board with what Napoleon was saying that eventually they made up their own lies to cover up the reality that in fact their lives had gotten a lot worse since Napoleon took power.
Orwell has made the events and actions in Animal Farm correspond to the events that happened in the Russian Revolution to give his readers a better understanding on what really happend during the 24 years that Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union (Russia). George Orwell's message through Animal Farm is that society will never have a successful socialistic society due to human nature, in this case, Stalin.
