"When dictatorship is a fact, revolution becomes a right" - Victor Hugo
Dictatorship - Good or Bad?
Dictatorship is what happens when socialism is unable to satisfy the dominant urges of the human nature. Dictatorship goes hand in hand with socialism in the Russian Revolution as well as Animal Farm. An example of this would be when The Bolsheviks overthrew Tsar Nicholas II and created a communist, socialist state where everyone was equal. Did it work? No, the leaders of that revolution became more and more greedy and selfish and eventually their socialist dream turned into a dictatorship fantasy. This is the same with Animal Farm (dictatorship. political science.). When the animals first overthrew the previous leader (Mr. Jones) they wanted to create a socialistic society where everyone was equal. It worked for a while but eventually the pigs started to fall into their own socialistic world where they lived a dream and the other farm animals went back to being ill-treated and dictated upon.
Orwell wanted to show that there is no dictatorship without socialism as the urge for power needs to come from somewhere. This means that socialism will never work due to the fact that nature has built into humands the will to lead and create a sustainable heirarchy that is meant to be followed. Orwell used names in the story to signify that dictators are everywhere and they can even arise out of good intentions/thoughts that will benefit the community. Evidence of this is the name Orwell has given Stalin in the novel, Napoleon. Napoleon was a French General in the 18th-century that ruled as a dictator, like Stalin, ad so Stalin is appropriately named in the story to show that he was a dictator.
Orwell's political knowledge really makes it easier for his readers to understand what the Russian Revolution was about and how socialism will never work as either a group of people or a sole person will rise up above all the rest and claim absolute, ultimate political power.
