"There are no absolute rules of conduct, either in peace or war. Everything depends on circumstances" - Leon Trotsky
(Below: Representation of what Snowball did)
Leon Trotsky was a visionary man. He wanted to change the Soviet Union into a communist state by appeasing the public with his grand schemes and well thought-out plans. Trotsky wanted to expand the growing political system known as socialism, which time timme will evolve into communism, thoughout the world. Trotsky's beliefs were based upon Karl Marx's system and the Communist Manifesto. (Stalin vs. Trotsky. 2013.). During the political battle between Trotsky and Stalin, there were a number of speeches made by both parties that stated their ideas and beliefs to the general public.
In the beginning of the battle between these two political giants, Trotsky took the lead with his brilliant speeches, great confidence and quick mind whereas Stalin was sorely lacking in this area. It looked as though Trotsky would have an undeniable victory but no, Stalin got it back and that is when things started to change. (Stalin vs. Trotsky. 2013.). Eventually, Stalin used his cunning mind and got help from two men that shared his same views. These two men eventually found chinks in Trotsky's armor. Stalin used these chinks to evict Trotsky out of the war party and ultimately exile him from the Soviet Union all together.
How does this relate to Animal Farm? In which part of the story did this occur? Stalin was Napoleon and Trotsky was Snowball, when they fought for power when the first leader Old Major (Lenin) died, they agreed that all animal should be equal. Snowball tried to carry out this law but eventually the pigs (government) grew greedy and kept the produce of the farm for themselves. After a while of 'co-leading', Napoleon decided that he wanted to lead alone so he schemed to get rid of his rival, Snowball. Napoleon made Snowball an excuse for the problems that occured on the farm such as things happening for no reason, rules being changed, why Snowball's thoughts and beliefs were bad etc. Napoleon used this against Snowball in order to win the hearts and minds of the farm animals, to show that Snowball was not a good leader. The events that happend in the real Revolution are expertly integrated into the story by Orwell which makes the Russian Revolution that much easier to understand. It also give a new perspective on the characters that played major rules in shaping our future and making it the way it is today (George, Orwell. Animal Farm.).
